Silk Worm - Catocala

Silk Worm - Catocala
Cade's Cove, Smoky Mountains National Park, Tennessee, USA
June 9, 2008
What we called silk worms growing up this was hanging from a tree and swinging in the breeze, making a photograh difficult, but I got two, including one from the underside. I don't know if it's possible to identify anything from this, but thought I'd give it a try.

Unfortunately many caterpillars
(most? all?) have this ability. Size would be of some help if you can get it. We don't really recognize this lovely, but would say we have a gut sense that this is one of the Catocala. Sorry, the two of us can't do any better for you on this, but maybe some of the other contributors can.

This would have been somewher
This would have been somewhere between an inch and a half and close to two inches long.
