Lawn Destroyer? - Noctua pronuba Salem, Marion County, Oregon, USA June 19, 2008 Size: 1.25-1.5 in. in length
I laid new sod in Sept. 06 and then last summer started noticing moths flying out of my lawn when I water. I'm seeing a lot of them again this summer as well as finding pupae just under the surface of the dirt as I'm pulling weeds in my lawn and flower beds. Much of my lawn has died off and I'm left with dirt and clumps of grass despite by best efforts at feeding, watering and mowing. Are these moths responsible? I maintain a no-kill household and haven't quite figured out what to do if that's the case. The outer wings vary quite a bit -- some are a much lighter brown with little or no mottling though they all have the orange and black inner wings.
