Byssus Skipper - Problema byssus

Byssus Skipper - Problema byssus
Naples (Golden Gate Estates), Collier County, Florida, USA
June 3, 2005
Size: Approx. 1 inch
I am pretty sure of the "narrow-down" re: Subfamily Hesperiinae, but I didn't see any close matches in the guide. Maybe someone can help me out...

This skipper was on our buttonbush (Cephalanthus occidentalis). Unfortunately, this was the only image I was able to capture before the specimen flew away.

Hesperiinae sp(?)
I would say this is pretty certainly a female Byssus Skipper "Problema byssus". There is a good photo of one on the following website http://www.rlephoto.com/butterflies/skipper_byssus/index.htm Also check Kaufman's Focus Guide p. 337. Beautiful shot by the way. I am curious if it was nectaring on the flowers or not?

Byssus Skipper (ID'ed!)
Dude. You ROCK. Thanks for the comments, too.

The specimen was just resting on a leaf. I didn't see it feeding from the flowers, even though the buttonbush is in bloom. It isn't a stretch to think that it HAD been feeding there, though.

Time to put up a species page... Thanks again.

Hmmmm. It would appear that Ms. Lynette Schwimming has already constructed the species page. A hearty thanks there, too!

Come visit us at the homestead. All are welcome!
