American Bird Grasshopper - Schistocerca americana - female

American Bird Grasshopper - Schistocerca americana - Female
Kannapolis, Rowan County, North Carolina, USA
June 20, 2008
Size: between 3 and 4 inches
Spotted today while hanging out the wash and it's the first day of Summer! He's a VERY good flyer! I'm thinking it's a male because of the brown coloring as I read on this site. Is that correct?

I see nobody ever addressed the gender question.
She is actually a girl. Proportions are useful in this species (not coloring), but even better, in the second picture, you can see the ovipositor on the end of the abdomen.

Thanks
Thank you, how interesting to see he's a she!!

Yes.
This is one of the truly migratory locusts, and they are built for it:-)

Thank You!
I saw one yesterday but I didn't think to get my camera, this is all new to me but I think I'm going to have fun, anyway I'm almost positive it was mainly a pretty lime green color, which makes me think it was the female. I hope she comes back around so I can see again.

Nice pictures
