Ectobius slyvestris? - Ectobius sylvestris - female

Ectobius slyvestris? - Ectobius sylvestris - Female
Orillia, Simcoe, Ontario, Canada
June 20, 2008
Size: 1 cm approx.
Find these critters in the basement, they are really quick and I'm almost certain with my limited research that they are cockroaches. I managed to catch this one (but damaged his right antenae in the process) and I'm leaning towards the Pale Bordered Field Cockroach - Pseudomops septentrionalis (http://bugguide.net/node/view/7856). But the only thing is my species seems to be lighter coloured and spotted, perhaps an immature? The main thing we are wondering is if they are infectious breed, so any comments or ideas from anyone would be great! The exterminator has said cockroaches aren't this tiny but I think he may be uninformed, as cockroaches seem to come in all sizes, even really small...

so with domestic and woodland cockroaches, is there a difference in behavour? Like a woodland cockroach wouldn't be as infectious (or breed like crazy and raid the cupboards) in a home as a domestic then?

Adult female....
This is an adult female, and indeed the "wood cockroaches" have females with non-functional wings like this. It is certainly not any domestic species I am familiar with, so I'm leaning heavily toward an "outdoor" species, in particular Ectobius slyvestris. If I am correct, yours are the first images of a female for our guide pages! Very nice images they are, too.

Thanks!
Thanks for the info! A Female you say, and yes I noticed the non-functional wings too... so with domestic and woodland cockroaches, is there a difference in behavour? Like a woodland cockroach wouldn't be as infectious (or breed like crazy and raid the cupboards) in a home as a domestic then? I'm just wondering if we should have any cause for concern, or if it's just an outdoor cockroach that happened to wander inside. (I did find two more recently in the kitchen) I googled the Ectobius sylvestris and found it mostly to be in Europe/Asia though, so I wonder if they are in North America.

by the way - The pics are thanks to my nice digital SLR Nikon D40 and not my photography skills however. I don't even have a macro lens, which would be ideal for the close up shots.

I forgot to mention that I li
I forgot to mention that I lived next door to a small, swamp like woodlot in an urban area, but I guess we've already established that they are an outdoor species. The May-September season located on the main page for this species also makes complete sense, as we first saw this species around the same time last year, but were absent during the fall/winter months. Does anyone want to confirm that this is the female of the Ectobius sylvestris and use my pictures for a female sample on the main page? http://bugguide.net/node/view/161813
