Beefly ? - Conophorus sackenii - Female
Silver lake, Amador County, California, USA
June 21, 2008
Size: 1 cm
This little guy was found hovering about irradically near flowers on the forest floor at the 7200 foot elevation . It landed on the rocks when the clouds threatened rain ... luckily for me . He is cute and fuzzy and did not seem to bother people at all . Thanks for any help in his i.d.

Moved
Moved from Conophorus.

Keys to C. sackenii in Hall & Evenuuis(1) and agrees with description (for female, from well-separated eyes) and range given there. In particular, the 1st antennal segment is more than 1/2 the length of the entire antenna; the scutellum does not appear to be shiny; and the wing infuscation agrees exactly with that described for sackenii in Hall & Evenhuis(1).

Moved
Moved from Flies.

ID
This is Conophorus (Diptera: Bombyliidae) but I can't get to species right now.
