Totally unknown bug. Need help. - Neoclytus acuminatus
Sacramento, Northern California/Sacramento Valley County, California, USA
June 20, 2008
Size: 1/2 inch
Found on my dead appletree. There were several crawling up and down the trunk and some on the branches. I think the tree died of disease and the not bugs but I'd like to find out for sure. Never seen them before this. Legs long like a hopper, color like a wasp, body more like a beetle. I'm stumped.

Not an expert but...
I think it is in the Longhorned Beetles (Cerambycidae) family...

Also look through Neoclyus genus.

The strips seem to be a good match with Red-Headed Ash Borer (Neoclytus acuminatus) but the color, namely red, seems wrong...

But this might give you a starting place...

I'd have to agree with you Ro
I'd have to agree with you Ron. Neoclytus acuminatus was recently (2005?) discovered infesting backyard trees in Sacramento. It looks more like the western form of the species (N. a. hesperus) which is uniformly reddish brown.

wow..
duplicate...

Not sure what happened there...
