Size: .75 to 1 inch
Dead cat nearby, two of these beetles were flying in the vicinity. Hefty-bodied, proboscis.

Palmetto weevil.

They didn't kill the cat.

Very good. I had no idea weevils got this big. The proboscis should have been a give away, but since the cat was nearby, I figured they must have been carrion/burying beetles. As it turns out, they were, in fact, hovering around saw palmettos that I recently began hacking out of one area of my yard...
