There are a few other pictures around here of midges with similar holes in the top of the thorax. Mine is tan instead of green. I suspect they are chironomid midges. Hopefully some day I'll have the references I need to determine that.

If you have a larger picture, useful features are the back of the top of the thorax (postnotum), where the presence of a groove separates chironomidae from similar families(1); wing veins; and tip of abdomen.
