For nearly 20 years, this species had been missing from our local fauna until a year ago, when a single individual was found a few miles from the present site. This photo is of one of a small breeding population now in residence. The larval host plant is Astragalus leucopsis var. trichopodus, which was also host to the federally endangered Palos Verdes blue butterfly, not seen on this spot since 1982.

When you write "our local fauna" what does it means: USA, California, LA county or Forrestal Nature Preserve?

"Local" is a neatly vague phr
"Local" is a neatly vague phrase that implies some specificity. For me, it will normally apply to the southwestern part of the Los Angeles basin, i.e. the Palos Verdes Peninsula and a few miles northward toward Santa Monica and eastward toward Long Beach.
