Barklouse - Teliapsocus conterminus

Barklouse - Teliapsocus conterminus
Lacey (near Olympia), Thurston County, Washington, USA
June 24, 2008
So I'm out taking bug shots, and on the way in, this *really* cool, almost translucent bug lands on the car next to me. I get it under the lens and realize it's like nothing I have in my collection of pics. Some really cool markings including fake "eyes" on the back. Can't WAIT to get it up on the guide and at least figure out what order or family it belongs to!!! And...then...I get it on the computer at my desk and see the wing venation...and I start to suspect...it's just an aphid. *yawn*
Well, at least it's different enough looking that maybe someday we'll have an aphidophile come through and help ID it.

Bark louse
Sorry, but this isn't an aphid. ;)
Bark lice have chewing mouth parts & big(-ish), boxy heads.
In fact, it kinda looks like a Metylophorus, but only an expert can confirm this. I'm sure someone will be by to help. :)

Not an expert
but wing veins remind me of this one, I think yours may be a female.

confirmed: Teliapsocus conterminus (Walsh)
Ed Mockford det.

cool! (again)
Thanks, Jonas. All of a sudden the critter is cooler again. It'll be neat if we can actually take it to genus. I'd forgotten...I did have a bark louse last year, but the pic was so blurry, that's all we could say about it. Anyway, I'm all a-titter about my critter again. :)
