waterscorpion pair - Curicta howardi - male - female

waterscorpion pair - Curicta howardi - Male Female
Austin, Wild Connections, Travis County, Texas, USA
June 25, 2008
Size: about an inch
Found in a garden pond. Appears to be a courting pair as they wouldn't leave each other even after being disturbed. This is Curicta howardi, the only species in the genus found in Texas.

Moved
Moved from Waterscorpions.

Curicta howardi indeed!
If these were found in Texas, they indeed are Curicta howardi. As listed on the nearctica website, C. howardi is one of only two species in this genus in the U.S. and is only found in certain parts of Texas and Louisiana. It is very rare to see insects of this genus unless one is looking for them, so congratulations Valerie on finding a very elusive insect!

These images should be moved to a new species page.

I agree
I thought that it would be nice to add this genus to the guide, but no editor has yet noticed the addition to make a new page. These insects are certainly not hard to find in this exact location and they are breeding in a large garden pond. The babies are now showing up - very cute and tiny versions of the adults.
