I'm pretty sure I've photographed these on Physalis too - can't remember if I ever figured out the ID.

that frass they carry on their backs? My first thought was ants until I opened the images on my comp.

BTW I found my image and realized it was Lema solani, so I think you might be the right track with that genus. Any adult beetles around? The few times I've photographed these, adults have been nearby.

 
Unfortunately
I didn't capture any images of adults which I don't recall seeing.
