Weird Bug With Red Eye

Weird Bug With Red Eye
Ann Arbor, Washtenaw County, Michigan, USA
This bug was on a long type plant. It was not shy. I could touch it and it wouldn't move.

Membracidae.
This is a "tree hopper," not all species of which are to be found in trees. The extension of the pronotum (top section of the thorax) down the back of the abdomen is typical of membracids. Some species are ornamented with spikes or crests or horns...quite remarkable. Do check out the existing images we have in the guide pages. Dr. Andy Hamilton is our resident expert on these and related insects, so he might have a genus and species name for this one when he next visits here.

Ophiderma
The crest is distorted, so you can't tell the species.

Frass this.
