Male Pterotus obscuripennis.
Neat find! Females of this lampyrid are larviform.

Male Pterotus obscuripennis.
Thanks Eric. I found an image of Dendroides cyanipennis in Kaufman/Eaton that I thought would clinch the ID; glad you came in.

thanks --
what a relief. seems to even have an english name: Douglas Fir Glowworm -- found at http://mv.lycaeum.org/anagrams/glow_worms.html

can it be...
...some kind of weird Denticollis? what a dumb idea though

not Zarhipis
Thanks, I started to look at Dendroides when Eric Eaton's mail came through.
Michel Kleinbaum

likely not Western Zarhipis
If you compare with the images in the guide entry you'll notice that the antenna are different and that the abdomen is lacking the dark band.

Reminds me of a solider beetle (canthraidae) but the antennae are wrong.

likely not Western Zarhipis
you are right. I started to look at Dendroides when Eric Eaton's mail came through. Thanks
