What Bug? - Hexagenia

What Bug? - Hexagenia
Crystal Lake, McHenry County, Illinois, USA
June 28, 2008
Size: about 1 inch

Moved
Moved from Mayflies.

I'll second the nomination
This is probably Hexagenia limbata (as are the vast majority of the specimens in the Hexagenia section). H. limbata is transcontinental in distribution and displays truly incredible variation in color and markings.

The only other possibility for this one would be H. rigida. About the only way to be truly certain would be to look at the "nasty bits." H. rigida is rather distinctive in that regard. In fact, I believe that may be how it got its name.

OK, I know--that's probably too much information. :)

i'd say, subimaginal male Hexagenia
