big green beetle - Calosoma scrutator

big green beetle - Calosoma scrutator
Ailsa Craig, Middlesex, Ontario, Canada
June 7, 2005
Size: about 25 mm
First seen under garage light, then it ran off and I had to chase it down the driveway in the dark. Size-wise, seems halfway between Calosoma wilcoxi (20 mm at CBIF; 18-26 mm in Guide) and C. scrutator (30 mm at CBIF; 25-35 mm in Guide). Comparison images here.

Moved from Calosoma.

Probably C. scrutator
Dillon & Dillon (1961) have C. wilcoxi as 16-20mm with the base of the pronotum narrower than the apex and C. scrutator as 25-30mm with pronotal base and apex approximately equal. I'd wager this is most likely scrutator.

base of pronotum
Thanks, Ethan. I know that the base of the elytra is the anterior portion, and the base of the head is the posterior portion... but is the base of the pronotum the anterior or posterior portion?
