These are great shots. This fly is taking off in a relaxed state in very much the same way demonstrated by the fruit fly that was shown in the film I watched. That film, which included high-speed camera footage of take-offs, also recorded a fruit fly taking off while attempting to evade what it thought was a large object descending upon it from directly above. (In fact, the "descending object" was an illusion created through special lighting effects.) When under duress, the fruit fly would not do the "jumping jack" maneuver but would tumble or flop to the left or right and basically appear to be doing anything it could to get out of the direct line of descent of the object while also getting airborne as fast as possible. It was actually pretty far-out footage. In some instances, the fly would essentially be attempting to take off while lying on its back.-- Dave
