Your pic of the CK perching on the end of a stem (see attached) is of a
Sphecius grandis male (the pic is so sharp that I can count the segments of
the antennae!). S. convallis never have yellow on the end of the abdomen
(gaster), as does the one in your photo

Probably.
Actually, it was the 'other' specimen that I can confirm is S. convallis. This one is likely to be, but we have S. grandis, too, and the two can look almost identical. Separation is based on punctation of the first abdominal tergite, which differs between the two species. No way you can see that in these images; no way anybody is going to try it with live specimens:-)

Confused
Eric says that he can't confirm the species and you say that he did. Is it truly convallis?
