Size: approx. 20 mm
These were found in the ground. The pointed end actually moves when you hold the cocoon.

We have found them in Maryland too. When we pulled some onion grass out it was in the dirt that the bulb was in.

Moth
I imagine they could be any number of moths. Here is one that I had emerge.
