The 747 of beetles - Prionus
Santa Rita Mountains, ~5000 ft, Pima/Santa Cruz County, Arizona, USA
June 27, 2008
Size: 6cm
I wasn't quite expecting to see this species in Juniper Woodland and at such a high altitude. I had never seen one before, so you can imagine my surprise to find such a huge beetle shortly after setting up my MV light!

I presume this is a Palo Verde Root Borer based on its size but please correct me if I'm wrong!

This one is tough ... the angle of the photo doesnt give a good look at the pronotum. This can only be one of two spp.: californicus or heroicus. Can't say for sure which one.

Not Derobrachus.
This is a female Prionus, possibly Prionus heroicus. Do wait for Ted MacRae, Mike Thomas, or another excellent beetle expert to comment.

Hmm...
First I'd like to say thanks Eric for always replying so rapidly to my most recent photos! Your comments have been incredibly helpful in identifying the species I encountered in Arizona.

How could you tell that this is Prionus and not Derobrachus, and that it was a female? I'm certainly no authority on beetles so I'd love to learn about differences like these :-)
