Size: ~15-20mm
This guy landed briefly on Heteromeles arbutifolia in our yard, but didn't stay long enough for me to get a good photo. Maybe Anoplius, looks similar to .

it's Anoplius it is A. aethiops.

I'd agree it is a female spider wasp. What a tarsal rake she has on her front legs!
