Almost done with the fatherly duties - Abedus herberti - Male
Santa Catalina Mountains, Pima County, Arizona, USA
June 26, 2008
Size: 4 - 5cm
This male Abedus herberti has been working very hard the past few weeks making sure the eggs on his back have been kept moist and receiving plenty of oxygen. Most of the eggs have hatched, but a few are still left. This male is right at the water's edge using an undercut bank as shelter, and he's positioned so that the top of the eggs are just above the water's surface where they can exchange gases more efficiently than in water.

Hoekstra and Smith confirmed in a paper about the distribution of Curicta pronotata that the Abedus species living in this particular stream is Abedus herberti.
