Philaenus spumarius

Philaenus spumarius
Racine, Racine County, Wisconsin, USA
July 4, 2008
Size: Less than 5mm
So many interesting things on this bug. Looks like it has a radiator grill on the front....and what is that along the side (like an extra set of smaller eyes and smaller legs -- is there another bug hiding on it, or just part of the bug? )

spittlebug Philaenus spumarius
the radiator thing is the reinforced casing of the muscular pump used to suck the sap, which he does a lot. the compound eye is right behind the 'hood' looking at us, and all the rest is his numerous sturdy knees, shind, & feet
