Hymenopteran - Trichiosoma triangulum

Hymenopteran - Trichiosoma triangulum
Cobble Hill, Cowichan Valley, Vancouver Island, British Columbia, Canada
June 13, 2008
I need to start carrying a ruler with me!! At least I have the camera. This bee/wasp seemed to be resting on some new buckwheat growth, and stayed there for at least 10 minutes while I shot a whole bunch of images of it. I couldn't get over the size of the legs on it, the club-like antennae and the lovely wings.

Cimbicid sawfly.
This is a cimbicid sawfly, Trichiosoma triangulum. Neat insect:-) Steer clear of those jaws, though....They can girdle twigs. Dropped by your website, love the art (and the kitty)!

I try to carry a ruler
- you can't always get it out in time, but you can often measure the plant where the insect was sitting, after the fact. One other thing I find useful is to estimate in relation to the width of my thumbnail (12mm). If I can get my thumb in the image, that's great - if not, I take a photo of my hand with the appropriate number of fingers held up - 4 for 4mm etc. immediately after I take the insect image. You can often estimate pretty closely in the field but when you view later have no clue how big something was. Can you guess that lack of sizes on submissions is one of my pet peeves? : )

I don't know what it is, but it's very interesting-looking.
