Firefly Mimic - Podabrus flavicollis

Firefly Mimic - Podabrus flavicollis
Lexington, Fayette County, Kentucky, USA
May 17, 2008
Appears to be one of the Soldier Beetles (Cantharidae). A close mimic to a lightning bug in several aspects so perhaps Podabrus. The date of the picture was several weeks before the first lightning bug is usually seen in this area and this year they were several weeks late.

Podabrus flavicollis LeConte
Moved from Podabrus.

I agree...
it's a shame podabrus posts keep piling up unsorted in the Guide -- quite a diversity accumulated already

sorting,
we could sort by species groups, but I haven't seen a reference that breaks Podabrus up that way. And I don't know enough about the species variation to just make up our own "groups" from external patterns. If you have any other ideas, please let us know. From what little I know of the genus, we'll probably never get most of these IDed any further.
