Robber fly - Dioctria hyalipennis

Robber fly - Dioctria hyalipennis
Milton, Massachusetts, USA
June 8, 2005

Mass robber
There is only one Dioctria species in the east. It is Dioctria baumhaueri and this certainly could be it. I think that after they feed the orange gets brighter. It was introduced to the US and has spread in the NE.

Dioctria
Indeed, it appears that Geller-Grimm have blended baumhaueri and hyalipennis. Fisher mentions the possible equality in his 1997 list. The literature is slow to catch up sometimes. It remains our only species in the NE in the genus.

baumhaueri
Only one choice makes it easy. Thanks again.

page already in Guide
listed under Dioctria hyalipennis, apparently a synonym of D. baumhaueri (or vice versa). See Remarks and Internet References on that page.
My discussion with Paul Beuk on this page gives more info and links on the synonomy of hyalipennis and baumhaueri.

moved
I moved the images to the hyalipennis page and deleted the baumhaueri page. It sure can get confusing. Thanks
