Lucanus capreolus

Lucanus capreolus
Dixon Springs, Macon County, Tennessee, USA
July 5, 2008
Size: 4cm
This specimen flew into my windowscreen about 9pm 7/5/08, then I ran outside, caught it, took pics, and released it. I am almost certain this is a Lucanus capreolus (stag beetle) but feel free to add a comment or share any info regarding this beetle. It is exactly 4cm long, powerful and restless, but never made any attempt to fly away. As I held a pencil to it, it buried its pincers into the eraser easily...very impressive pincer strength!
