Water Strider - Limnoporus

Water Strider - Limnoporus
Sitka County, Alaska, USA
August 17, 2007
Even after reading the note about how to distinguish between Gerris and Aquarius, I'm not positive which I have here. If I had to guess, I would say the body is longer than 11mm, but past experience suggests that I am not good at estimating sizes, so I'm hoping someone else can confirm the genus based on other characters.

May not be Gerris or Aquarius...
Looks like Limnoporus...The reddish brown colouration and slender appearance suggest so. A closer headshot may confirm genus id- if the 1st antennal segment is shorter than the 2nd and 3rd combined, it is that genus.

Conveniently...
Conveniently, a little later in the summer, my kids caught one that I photographed close up. I've added it here. Given the angle of that photo, I'm having a little trouble deciding whether the segments are correct for a Limnoporus based on it, however I did go back to the original image and looking at it at higher resolution and zoomed in, it seems clear that the first segment is shorter than the length of the second and third combine. There seem to be two known from Alaska, L. rufoscutellata and L. dissortis.

Thanks for the help.

yep
it's definitely a Limnoporus.
