Frassy webber insect on black cherry - Neurotoma fasciata

Frassy webber insect on black cherry - Neurotoma fasciata
Ralls County, Missouri, USA
July 5, 2008
Size: one inch long
This gregarious insect larva had no prolegs so maybe it is a sawfly or beetle larva. They exuded a dark red liquid from the mouth.

Moved from Unidentified Webworms. I am totally unfamiliar with this species, but I agreed with your suggestion that it might be a sawfly; I looked at the webspinning sawfly section to see what larvae in that family look like, and saw that there is a cherry web-spinning sawfly... and I followed the link from the guide page and read that this species is known to exude a red fluid from its mouth when disturbed. And it's a gregarious species. So it seems like a good fit to me; evidently an earlier instar than the ones already in the guide.
