Stictia flight - Stictia carolina - male

Stictia flight - Stictia carolina - Male
Holla Bend NWR, Pope County, Arkansas, USA
July 6, 2008
Size: 30mm
After quite a few shots this is one of my better of the big Stictia in stall guard flight. The colony I have been visiting for years is just huge this year. Amazing to stand in the midst of the colony which has three or four other wasps species working on the fringes. These are large wasps. Like having 500 Cicada killer sized wasps around you. These were guarding territories which they seem to do much more aggressively (towards other wasps) than most of the other colonials. Anywhere within three miles of this colony humans are periodically inspected closely to try and scare a horsefly off of them. You just stand at attention and wait.

Just awesome.
Great shot of a male...I am highly envious. Someday I hope to experience what you are describing....Have yet to see one wild specimen.

Come on over
Went for robbers but the entire morning went to Sphecids. At another spot found a red-abdomened Bembicine that I have never seen. Took one. And watched some leafhoppers going in the ground with another species. The Stictia are just tremendous however.
