Looks like a Black Swallow Caterpillar but it's not - Callosamia promethea
West Greenwich, Kent County, Rhode Island, USA
July 6, 2008
Size: 1 inch
Two were found parallel to each other on the underside of a Sassafras leaf in a wooded area near a pond. I've browsed Wagner with no success. This species is similar to a Black Swallowtail but the yellow dots fall on the white bands and not on the black.

Callosamia promethea
this appears to be an younger instar of Callosamia promethea according to photos in Wagner, p. 243.

here is a similar photo on BG

Yes those are Callosamia prom
Yes those are Callosamia promethea larvae. 2nd instar, they are preparing to molt into their third by the way they look. I actually live in Rhode Island and I have found these on Sassafrass around here too. Nice to see a fellow Rhode Islander on BugGuide!

Thanks!
Thanks Moth Guy. I was looking in the wrong place! Thought it might be one of the Swallowtails.

Regards,

Michelle
