Thank you. What is the best way to preserve insects? Currently I use hairspray.

 
No hairspray necessary.
For roaches, just keeping them pinned and dry in a wood or cardboard box kept free from carpet beetles is good enough.

If you are really serious about bug collecting, there are all sorts of "officially approved" methods for doing things. Try Googling "insect collecting" and you'll see what I mean. A good introduction to these techniques is given here.
