I first noticed nymphs grazing on my rose bushes. Then, out of my snapdragons emerged this giant (okay, maybe 3-4" long) armored gray grasshopper with black and white leg spines, and really LONG antennae (about as long as his/her body). I have watched this individual run the antennae past his mouth parts, presumably to clean them? Other images will show the posterior end and anatomy - perhaps you could tell me the sex of the individual? I'm trying to figure out if its a gray bird grasshopper, (Schistocerca nitens) or something else. I'm new at insect id so anything you can tell me is helpful.

Predatory katydid.
This is actually an adult shield-backed katydid known as the "sooty longwing," Capnobotes fulginosus. Very cool bug, nice images, too.
