Rotting tree dweller 2 - Drosophila - female

Rotting tree dweller 2 - Drosophila - Female
Newton, Middlesex County, Massachusetts, USA
July 8, 2008
Size: 2.5 mm
Near the fly below; this one is bigger.

Moved
Moved from Drosophila.

Drosophila, affinis group
Consistent with an affinis group female. The other possibility might be funebris group, but it looks like it has six rows of acrostichal hairs, not eight. A female would be slightly larger than the male.

Sharpened
I sharpened the picture a little so it might be easier to count hairs now. There is a slightly larger version on my Flickr page: http://www.flickr.com/photos/31715949@N00/2651535536/sizes/o/.

Drosophila affinis
Nice! You can see those six rows nicely, so I'll go with affinis group female (still leaves you with four possibilities, sorry - you'd need her male offspring to nail it down).
