Gall wasp female? -
Diplolepis spinosa
-
Kingston, Ontario, Canada
May 14, 2008
Size: approx. 8 mm
I'm guessing the large abdomen would make it a female gall wasp (ie. emerged from Rose galls I collected)

Ken, did you mean to move this from
Cynipidae? Seems like that is where it belongs if that is what it is as Eric states below.

Hi J&J - I thought -
perhaps incorrectly (see my comment on the first image in this series), that one of our gall experts (Joyce or Charley?) would be more likely to see it on the galls page and might leapfrog directly to a cynipid species from the appearance of the gall and the type of host plant... Feel free to move it back to Cynipidae, though - it was just an idea...

Still hoping!
Still keeping tabs on this nice set of images. If we don't hear from the gall experts in a few days, we should probably move these back to the Gall Wasp pages...

Out of season
These gall wasps are out of season here in Canada, since it is fall and getting cold. The only remanence of these wasps at this time of year would be the galls themselves with the larvae that will overwinter and emerge next spring. Good luck with the project!
