Pantala hymenaea ? - Pantala hymenaea
Aromas, San Benito County, California, USA
July 10, 2008
Size: ~7cm wingspan
My first decent dragonfly shot! I occasionally see dragonflies patrolling up and down our long driveway, but rarely do I see them land where I can photograph them. This guy was hunting along the Ceanothus bushes along our driveway and after several minutes of watching him, he finally landed where I could get close to him. The dark spot on the posterior base of the hind wing makes me think he is Pantala hymenaea. (live oak/chaparral habitat).

Congrats on your personal first!
You'll find them easier to shoot now. A friend of mine calls this phenomenon "getting the first olive out of the jar".
