Alydidae

Alydidae
Naples (Golden Gate Estates), Collier County, Florida, USA
June 11, 2005
Size: Approx. 1/2 inch
This little bug is resting on a milkweed seed pod. At first, I thought it was an assassin bug of some sort. After I took a couple of photographs, I thought "Oh - it's just an ant..."

We have tons of carpenter ants (Camponotus sp.) around here.

Then when I had a closer look on the computer, I realized it isn't an ant at all! I knew those antennae were just too long!

Probably Alydidae.
At that size, it excludes most of the many, many ant-mimicking Miridae. Nice image of a colorful and convincing mimic.
