Beetles feeding on Sap from a Stump - Glischrochilus sanguinolentus

Beetles feeding on Sap from a Stump - Glischrochilus sanguinolentus
New Hampshire, USA
May 13, 2008
Size: 5-6 mm
A sizable gathering of the red beetles had amassed on this tree stump that had been felled by a beaver living in the adjacent lake/pond. The white froth is probably sap (that's possibly reacting with rain water or has absorbed a fair amount of water, as it was or had just rained when I took this photo.) It might also be mold, but I doubt it if it was a relatively fresh stump.
