Size: 3 mm?
I believe this guy was collected from a beaver pond by the horse stables on campus. It's practically a small lake, with an inlet & an outlet & plenty of lily pads & some under water vegetation.

I was eying that entry in the guide prior to posting this image... cool. I've been seeing a lot of riffle beetles, but all of them have been preserved in ethanol from river samples taken by the entomology department at my college. XD

 
This
species can be found in ponds (at the Old Reservoir in this case).
