Cocoon in hammock

Cocoon in hammock
Kellettville, Forest County, Pennsylvania, USA
July 5, 2008
On a leaf in tall weeds near the water, out in the middle of the Allegheny National Forest, right where the Tionesta Creek and Fork Run meet. I think that it is a cocoon, but I would only be a little suprised if it was a spider egg case. Main cocoon around 10mm but that is just a guess.

Moved
Moved from Moths.

Cocoon
Likely a moth cocoon--the elliptical shape would be unusual for a spider egg sac, but I suppose I wouldn't rule that out completely. It reminds me of a tent caterpillar cocoon, but that would be more like an inch or so. Did the main cocoon have a spongy/woolly texture, or more papery?

Texture
Like a normal cocoon I remember investigating as a kid, I guess the spongy/woolly texture. Mens sock you might wear with a suit rolled in a ball.
