wowww! Ken -- thanks for the new fam!
pls look for more aggressively and post pix! =v=

Moved from "Orthorrhapha" (Brachycera excluding Aschiza and Schizophora).

Thanks!
Thanks, v, Joel and Norm! I will be up at this field station for a week-long birding (!) class in June - I'll see if I can find some more of these flies then...

Pelecorhynchidae, genus Glutops
Pelecorhynchidae, genus Glutops...in reviewing this further, I think it is Glutops

Not Stratiomyidae
This fly is not in the family Stratiomyidae. It is possibly in the rare family Pelecorhynchidae, genus Glutops. However, a view of the front of the head would be necessary to confirm this.

Thank you!
Unfortunately, I think these are my only images, so perhaps I need to move it back to Diptera or frass... I will check to see if I have any more images on my home computer.

Don't frass
It's worth keeping this with Norm's comment, even if it isn't definitively identifiable from these images. Pelecorhynchidae is one of the few lower brachyceran families not represented in Bugguide yet.

OK -
I just checked my stored photos and I don't have any other angles of this fly, unfortunately. I did add a close-up of the head, although it sounds like that won't cinch it... Oh well.
