most likely Buprestis confluenta.

best guess:
looks like a Buprestis to me -- a nice one, too

I am wondering if it isn't a Wood Borer Beetle..... kind of looks like the photos I have seen of them

thanks for you reply... do you have a photo of that species.... ?

I wish I would have kept it instead of releasing..... especially if it is a Wood Borer... dont' need that around all our trees

i'm not good with common names...
...but it does live in wood, sure, and seems to be quite a fascinating find -- it's definitely not a common species. You'll find pics of its kin here -- feel free to browse the pages, they are beautiful. It may be relieving for you to know that despite its habits it's not a pest -- most of wood borers aren't. They are every bit as important a part of our world as the trees are.

I think you have found it's r
I think you have found it's relatives... wish I could find one that looks just like it but that may be like finding a photo of two people that look alike....

thank you for your help, very nice of you.... this find has certainly made me more aware of the insect family..... I will take notice more.... this little guy literally fell down from the top of a doorway as I was about to leave through it..... hit me on the head and landed on the floor..... I noticed it's pretty colors right away and took it home to take a photo and then released it...... it is not where I released it this morning to it must have gone on it's way

these tend to vary in color patterns,
so the picture of Buprestis confluenta seen here (the best one i've managed to find for you) looks different indeed. Your specimen was a really nice one, and i can tell you i would elated out of my wits if a bug like that showed up around...

THE ONE YOU FOUND IS REALLY CLOSE... ALMOST EXACT

WISHING I WOULD HAVE TAKEN MORE PHOTOS OF IT AND HAD A MACRO LENS

from what I have read about i
from what I have read about it.... it likes cottonwood trees..... and THERE IS A COTTONWOOD tree near our station..... someone may have been filling with fuel by the tree and it landed on them and then traveled with them into our station.... I might check that tree to see if there are more of them

thanx Shirley---
i wish you find more but i know from experience they are extremely agile, esp. in warm weather, so catching them may be quite a task
