Wingless moth? - Orgyia leucostigma - female

Wingless moth? - Orgyia leucostigma - Female
Air Station Prairie, Glenview, Cook County, Illinois, USA
July 13, 2008
We were at the prairie at the old Glenview Naval Air Station for a workday of removing white sweet clover and collecting Spiderwort seeds when one of the volunteers spotted this strange creature on a Compass Plant leaf. It looks to us like a female moth who made her cocoon on the leaf and is now laying her eggs there.
