Clavate Tortoise Beetle larvae - Plagiometriona clavata

Clavate Tortoise Beetle larvae - Plagiometriona clavata
Maine, USA
July 12, 2008
Size: tiny, maybe 2 millimeters
this guy looks like he is munching away, found on leaf with many tiny holes. Of course he is so small he's not doing much damage...when I touched him with my fingernail, his tail thingy (fecal shield) would move up to a more 90 degree position. I also wonder if he may be related to the beetle looking guy I posted a pic of just before this?

thanks!

BTW
Beetles and other insects with complete metamorphosis have larvae. True bugs and those with incomplete metamorphosis have nymphs.
Many people don't know this; that is why the glossary is so helpful.

thanks!
thanks for the info! I took the word "nymph" from this photo, which looked like what I had found... now I know!

I believe it is a Tortoise Bettle larva...
but I think it will be hard to tell which species from these pictures.

Please read the comments on these pictures about the fecal shield...
