Big Black Shiny Beetle at the Dam - Prionus laticollis

Big Black Shiny Beetle at the Dam - Prionus laticollis
Lake Hopatcong, New Jersey, USA
July 5, 2008
Size: 1.5 inches (approx)
I found this hard back, shiny beetle with long, thick antennae by a green bush at the dam.

Moved
Moved from Longhorned Beetles.

Crambycidae
Maybe Prionidae

Thank you very much!! I am delighted at how quick you were. Sincerely, Verena

I agree.
Cerambycidae family, subfamily Prioninae. Reminds me most of a male broadnecked root borer, Prionus laticollis. Most other species have sharper, more defined "teeth" on the lateral margins of the thorax.

And a giant "Thank you" for the amazing amount of detail you provided. I am clearly over me head in this realm. Fun, though! My 7 year old daughter and friend were delighted at this find. Sincerely, Verena
