Biting fly

Biting fly
Algonquin Provincial Park, Nipissing District, Ontario, Canada
June 9, 2005
Size: ~2mm
A tiny fly on a Wood Frog (Rana sylvatica). I assume it is biting the frog, but what family is it? I have additional, even poorer images, which apparently show that it does not have a long proboscis as a mosquito would. Could it be in the Chaoboridae or Corethrellidae?

Ceratopogonidae.
Probably one of the "no-see-ums" in the family Ceratopogonidae. Might be able to get to a genus based on host alone, I don't know.

Thanks
Thanks Eric, I think you're probably right. I hadn't considered this family since the species that bite humans are so much tinier, but other members of the family do get much bigger. I'll move this to the family guide page.

that pesky little fly
hi, i live in Morocco and this photo is the closest image i've found to what has been driving my family nuts! they definitely DO bite humans. they hang out on the walls, are attracted to light and feed on blood. we've noticed that once they've fed, they turn black. they are pretty crafty in eluding us and getting inside mosquito nets and our kid is covered with bites, despite all our efforts. anyone with info on how to repel them will be hailed as a hero! i've tried all kinds of natural repellents, as i'd rather not expose our baby to DEET. recently, someone told me that plug-in mosquito cartriges work. HELP!
