Giant Ichneumon Wasp - Megarhyssa macrurus - male

Giant Ichneumon Wasp - Megarhyssa macrurus - Male
Ortonville, Oakland County, Michigan, USA
June 11, 2005
Size: 1 to 2"
Three sizes or stages observed. The smallest ones seem to be living in the tree coming and going through a small hole. The mid size one has the long tail but not the darker color. The largest one has beautiful coloring and is 4 to 6" long including tail, adult? All seemed to be living together as I have observed them over several days.

Moved
Moved from Orange and Brown.

Adults
They are all adults. If they have wings they are fully grown; so the size differences are due to belonging to different species or different sexes.

These look like males
Check at . Eric will tell us more, but they may have developed on beetle larva in the tree and are now just emerging. Fascinating images and story.
