Large Cocoon

Large Cocoon
Baton Rouge - BREC Bluebonnet Swamp Nature Center, East Baton Rouge Parish, Louisiana, USA
July 15, 2008
Size: 4.4 cm long
Large cocoon - 4.4 cm long and 2.2 cm wide and about 1.5 cm thick.
Attached to peppervine.
About 1 foot off the ground.
At the edge of forest trail.
Yellow-poplar and sweet gum overhead.

Is possible to tell if butterfly or moth?
Any guesses as to type?
If we brought it inside to see what hatches, any special conditions?
How long might it take?
Next year?

Looking by its condition
I'd say Silkmoth, and it will probably eclose within a week or less, maybe even more. I could be wrong.. (either way it will be a beautiful specimen! Show me some photos when it ecloses)

If I'm right, though - Keep it in the same conditions it was found. Same humidity, sunlight, heat, etc.

probably Polyphemus Moth
but luna would be my next choice.

Thanks
I hope we get to see what comes out.
I will post a picture if I get one.
