Gasteracantha cancriformis

Gasteracantha cancriformis
Houston, Harris County, Texas, USA
June 16, 2008
I think this is the first close-up shot of the red form.

Found in the backyard
I believe this is the first time I have successfully identified a spider I didn't already know. This one was in my backyard in Little Rock, Arkansas, more orange than red. At first I thought it had a captured ladybug on its back. I watched it for a good half hour - rather than having strong treads vs. sticky threads, I saw that it put sticky "poofs" every so often along the entire web.

Thank you Bugguide!

Excellent
nice find Mark! They are fun to watch.

Jan/Feb 2008 also in Bellaire TX
I also had one of these Gastheracantha cancriformis living in my garden in Jan/Feb 2009.

When I first saw it it was plump like the one below. after a few months it seemed like it had 'deflated' and looked more like the one pictured above (June16,2008).

Was it red or merely orange?
Was it red or merely orange?
Here is an orange one that lived outside our den window from Sept 2007 to Feb 2008 in Bellaire, TX

Mine was
completely red, but yours and mine are the same species, just different coloration.

Very cool
I've never seen this variation before.

Orb weaver
I just found out the name of this bug. Is it harmful? It has made a home on the side of my chicken coop in League City, TX

Hi Karen
Cool! They're quite harmless. I'd recommend watching it grow and catch things in its web!
